What SHOT Show is, and why new guns land in January
SHOT stands for Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade. It's the firearm industry's biggest yearly trade show, where makers show new guns, optics, ammo and gear to the dealers, distributors and reporters who sell and cover them. It's trade only, so most shoppers never set foot inside. That's where we come in.
Because nearly every buyer and reporter in the business is in one place that week, makers save their biggest launches for it. Many announce in the days before the doors open, often at a set time agreed with the press (an embargo). One thing worth knowing: a reveal isn't a release. Some products ship the same day; others take months. That's why we track availability separately from the announcement.
What to expect, and how we cover it
- The New releases table lists only official announcements: the maker's own site, press release or official X or Instagram account, linked on every row.
- MSRP and ship dates are what the maker says. A blank means they haven't said yet, not that we forgot.
- Talk that the maker hasn't confirmed stays in its own section with an Unconfirmed tag.
- The deals column comes first: once a new model reaches retailers, that's where you'll find our price comparison.
- Expect the first wave in early January, the biggest one the week of the show, and ship dates to firm up through spring.
