"Twist" is how fast the rifling (the spiral grooves inside the barrel) spins the bullet: 1:9 means one full turn every 9 inches. Each twist rate is matched to the bullets that caliber usually shoots.

The rifle itself

According to Savage, every Model 334 has:

• A 60-degree bolt lift and three locking lugs, for quicker cycling between shots.
• A free-floating, button-rifled carbon steel barrel with an 11-degree target crown.
• A three-position safety and a three-round detachable box magazine.
• A matte black carbon steel receiver with an integrated recoil lug and a one-piece steel Picatinny rail, so mounting a scope is simple.
• Either a matte black synthetic stock with a matte black action, or a Turkish walnut stock with a silver bolt.

What it's for, and which one fits you

This is a hunting rifle, plain and simple: a bolt action with a three-round magazine and a rail for a scope. It isn't designed to be a tactical rifle or a benchrest gun, and it does its intended job well.

Pick the caliber for what you'll hunt and where it's legal, then pick the stock you like. Some states limit which cartridges you can use for certain game, so check your state's hunting regulations before you choose. The compacts' shorter barrels make for a handier rifle, which is nice for smaller shooters, thick woods, or anyone who wants a rifle that's easier to handle in tight spaces.

Synthetic stocks don't mind rain or scratches. Walnut looks great and costs $170 more at MSRP on the models where both are offered. Either is a good choice.

The bottom line

The Model 334 lineup now covers more calibers and adds compact options, with MSRPs from $459 to $629. If you want a straightforward hunting rifle focused on the features hunters use most, it's a good one to add to your short list.
