Buying a gun in Florida: good to know

Waiting period
Applies to all firearms, not just handguns: 3 days, not counting weekends and legal holidays, or until the state records check is complete, whichever is later (Fla. Stat. 790.0655). Exemptions include concealed weapon license holders and, for rifles and shotguns, holders of a hunting license or hunter-safety certificate. Counties may require 3-5 days for handgun sales under Art. VIII s.5(b). This is under active challenge in court (see the notes above).
Handgun purchase permit
No state permit required. Licensed dealers run the federal NICS background check.
Shipping and online purchases
Buyers under 21 can't purchase any firearm, so dealers will turn down long-gun transfers to 18- to 20-year-olds. Otherwise the standard federal rules apply.

How an FFL transfer works

When you buy a gun online or from someone in another state, it ships to a local licensed dealer (an FFL) instead of your door. The dealer logs it in, you fill out ATF Form 4473 and pass the background check, and then you take it home. Dealers charge a transfer fee for this, often $20 to $75. Call first: ask whether they accept transfers from your seller, what the fee is, and whether they need the seller to email a copy of their license.
