Buying a gun in Connecticut: good to know
- Waiting period
- No fixed waiting period in the statutes was identified, but buyers must get a permit or eligibility certificate first.
- Handgun purchase permit
- Yes. Buyers need a pistol permit or a handgun eligibility certificate.
- Shipping and online purchases
- Most online ammunition sellers won't ship to CT without verifying a permit or certificate. Magazines over 10 rounds and rifles with 'assault weapon' features can't be sold to CT buyers. A new 2026 law (PA 26-41) would restrict the sale and import of 'convertible pistols' made on or after Oct. 1, 2026, but federal preliminary injunctions (Sept. 30, 2026) currently block those sales provisions.
How an FFL transfer works
When you buy a gun online or from someone in another state, it ships to a local licensed dealer (an FFL) instead of your door. The dealer logs it in, you fill out ATF Form 4473 and pass the background check, and then you take it home. Dealers charge a transfer fee for this, often $20 to $75. Call first: ask whether they accept transfers from your seller, what the fee is, and whether they need the seller to email a copy of their license.
